STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE -- Randy Newman's invective notwithstanding, short people have as many reasons to live as the longer-limbed, but it can be hard, particularly for men under 5 feet 8 inches, to find fashions that fit. Jimmy Au's For Men 5'8" and Under, the nation's only short men's designer store, offers these tips: * When wearing shorts, choose simple styles and patterns. Shorts that are too long and baggy can make shorter men look stumpy. Opt for trimmer shorts that are above the knee, even if you have to have them shortened. This helps create the perception of a longer leg line. * Follow the same guidelines for swim trunks: Choose simple, shorter styles. * Choose short sleeve sport shirts and polos in a trimmer and shorter fit. * Trim fit casual pants and jeans in ultra lightweight cottons are a great way to look and feel cool. Look for trim cuts in lightweight denims and cottons. * When choosing colors and patterns, stick to lighter colors on top to bring attention up, rather than down. Keep patterns small and vertical. "Our philosophy of designing accurately proportioned, tailored clothing and sportswear in styles and patterns that flatter a shorter man goes into everything we make in our collection and should also be in every shorter guy's mind when shopping," said Alan Au, client relations manager for Jimmy Au's. "Summer is one of the trickiest times of the year for shorter men but fortunately, current fashion trends favor the shorter man."
